SINGAPORE β Morning commuters on bus service 444 were yesterday forced to execute a series of careful sidesteps after a man positioned himself directly in front of the rear exit and remained there with complete confidence.
Witnesses say the man was not alighting, waiting for someone, or even looking outside. He simply stood at the doors, staring ahead as passengers squeezed around him one by one.
"It was like he genuinely believed everyone else would phase through him," said office worker Ms. Siamlahrugam Singham. "I've seen bollards with more spatial awareness."
Experts have since classified the incident as a textbook case of Main Character Syndrome, a condition where sufferers unconsciously assume the world will reorganise itself around their current location.
"It wasn't malicious," explained behavioural psychologist Dr. Tan Cheng Block. "He simply appeared unable to comprehend that the doors opening might indicate other people wished to leave the bus. It's a fascinating example of selective situational awareness."
By the final stop, passengers had collectively developed an efficient one-way pedestrian bypass around the man, with several instinctively thanking him as they navigated past, mistaking him for permanent bus infrastructure.
At press time, the same commuter had reportedly boarded an MRT train and was already standing directly in front of the doors before anyone else could get off.
